IS A MEGA TSUNAMI ON ITS WAY TO THE US????
I normally post about things that have happened already!
However, now I would like to post about something that has not happened yet, although scientists and researchers all agree that it will sooner or later!!!
First let me reference the difference between a "Tsunami" and a "mega Tsunami"
***A Regular Tsunami (like the one in Indoneasia in Dec. 2004).......is caused by an undersea earthquake, and although devestating, the waves from this type of tsunami rarely reach more than 30 feet high when they hit land, and a regular tsunami's waves break when they hit land like all normal waves do.
***A Mega Tsunami.......is caused by landslides that go into the ocean. The waves from these types of tsunamis can reach hundreds of feet high by the time it hits land and be several hundred miles across.
The waves of a mega tsunami do NOT break on shore but continue to roll over the land consuming everything in it's wake.
Volcanic Islands are the areas most likely to suffer landslides and there are volcanic islands all over the world. The largest chain of volcanic islands in the world are the Hawaiian islands!
However it is not the Hawaiiian islands that I wish to speak about today, but rather the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa!
One of the islands in the Canary island chain is called "Lapalma".
It is made up entirely of 2 volcanos. One extinct (the northside), and one still active (the southside)!
It is the active volcano mass that makes up the southside of the island that scientists say is most likely to be the next major landside on earth.
Scientists believe that the western flank of the southern volcano WILL collapse into the sea. This collapse will be caused by an eruption of the volcano which will heat up the water that is trapped inside the volcanos "vents" causing the land to seperate and slide off!!
Scientists believe the amount of land that will fall into the sea may be 20 klm or more! This is a huge land mass!!!!!
This may not happen for 100 or 1000 years, however it could happen TOMORROW!!
Scientists agree that it is not a question of IF, but rather simply a question of when!!
The waves at the site of the landslide will be hundreds of Klm high and will spread out and move towards the East coast of the United States!
It will take only approx. 8 hours to travel to the shores of the US, which is certainly not enough time to evacuate!
The wave would go from New York all the way to Florida and would reach as much as 12 1/2 miles inland once it hit, destroying everything!!!
This wave would be thousands of times larger than anything scientists have seen or studied before!
And just incase you think this can't happen!!!!!!.....................
Some 120,000 years ago a neighboring island of Lapalma had a landslide and evidence of it's destructive power can be seen in the Bahamas today!!
It completely reshaped the landscape of the Bahama islands and even picked up huge boulders off the sea floor and deposited them onto land that is several hundred feet above sea level.
These boulders can still be seen today. They still lay where they landed!!!
Another incident of a mega tsunami was in Lituya Bay Alaska in the 1950's. A landslide at the head of the bay fell into the water causing a "mega tsunami". It washed water onto the hillsides of the bay destroying trees some 400 feet up the hillside! Luckly because it is a "bay" area and was a small landslide, the damage was restricted to there and did not spread across the ocean!!
Lituya Bay also has evidence that the same thing happened there at least once before!!
So there you go!
And for those of you not on the "east" coast, don't think your immune to this type of disaster....Soon I will write an article about the cascadia fault line which lies just 40 miles off the west coast shores!!
This fault line is exactly like the one that caused the Indonesian tsunami, infact scientists call it the "twin fault line"!!
But I will save that for another day!!!
