UN MUST SHAPE UP OR NO MORE US MONEY

John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, said in an interview yesterday, that the US is demanding that the UN (United Nations) complete a massive overhaul of the "culture of corruption and incompetence" inside it's walls, that came to light out of Paul Volkers investigation of the Iraqi oil for food scandal a few months ago.
Mr. Bolton says the US is considering withholding their share of the annual budget from the UN unless and until this is done!
Mr. Bolton went on to say that the US furnishes over 22% of the UN's annual operating budget and that reform should drive the budget, not the other way around!!
In the year 2005, the US gave the UN $ 1.8 BILLION dollars...and for all this money the US only gets 1/2 of 1% of the vote in the general assembly!! (that is 1 out of 192 votes). The majority of the UN general assembly provides only 1 % of the UN operating budget each year according to Mr. Bolton.
Regarding the corruption charges, Mr. Bolton says the problem is, "the US congress is taking the Volker report very seriously, however the UN is reluctant to even talk about it".
It seems the UN is having trouble admitting they even have a problem!!!
As we speak, the US congress is putting forth a bill that would immediately withhold $100 Million from the UN.
Now as a sign that the UN wants to reform, they have choosen today ( with only a few days left until the Iraqi elections) to fire the head of the UN elections commitee, on allegations of sexual harrassment!
A move which the US, and others, find a bit questionable as the Iraqi elections are considered so important and so very near.
One might also find it questionable as to why no men from the Un have ever been fired for sexual harrassment, even though many charges have been leveled, but now, all of a sudden a woman IS fired over the same accusations!!!
I will be keeping my eye on this one!!!!
